The Management Center (TMC) is seeking a dynamic facilitator who loves teaching about effective, equitable, and sustainable management, project management, and work practices. We strive to excel in our work: we need someone who can deliver our existing curricula to a wide range of audiences (diverse in race, gender, positional power, organization type) and answer questions so thoughtfully and effectively that participants are left excited and ready to implement our tools! We also need someone who is aligned with our views of management – namely, that at the end of the day, great managers must deliver exceptional results toward their missions. This comes from understanding how management intersects with identity, power, and equity, as well as building and maintaining equitable and inclusive teams, transferring real ownership of work to others, and staying engaged and holding yourself and others accountable.  We are looking for someone who can conduct 2-5 day-long trainings per month as an independent contractor.

Who We Are

Our mission is to help leaders working for social change build and run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations.  Founded in 2006, we’re now a 50-person, $11.5 million organization (and growing!).  We've helped shape the practices of hundreds of influential organizations and thousands of individual managers, with a particular focus on social justice and educational equity organizations. Our clients work on critical issues, like advocating for educational equity, promoting immigration reform, fighting for racial, economic and gender justice, and protecting voting rights. We aim to help them by making their organizations as effective as possible, by providing coaching, training, and resources for the broader field.

We work hard to deliver services that help our clients actually implement our advice. Participants describe our trainings as engaging, practical, and fun, and this word of mouth has caused training demand to grow! 

What You’ll Do

Trainers will help impact both individuals and organizations by delivering our existing training program to diverse groups of non-managers and project managers across the country. We primarily offer  one-day trainings (virtually for now, both in person and virtually in the future), both publicly and for client organizations. Increasingly, we are working to meet demand from organizations that are led by and for Black, Indigenous, or other people of color.

Our training curricula focus on the elements of effective, equitable, and sustainable work and project management. We teach non-supervisory staff and project managers to ask great questions and make proposals to align with stakeholders on what success looks like in their work, seek, receive, and give feedback, manage up, down, and sideways, and do it all with a deep equity approach. Participants have a wide range of backgrounds -- from people who are just starting out in their careers to those who have been in their roles for decades; functional experts in areas like human resources, finance, communications, or policy, to organizers and advocates, to folks who support leadership and programming through a wide range of administrative roles. 

The primary gauge of your success will be the extent to which the organizations and individuals you train are ready to implement better, more equitable work and project management practices, and feel the training experience was useful and relevant to their work.

Who You Are

To be successful in this job, you will have a deep knowledge of how to work, manage, and lead equitably in social justice or educational equity organizations, and a wealth of your own stories and experiences to draw on to illustrate the concepts. You will also excel in these areas:

  • Teaching, both virtually and in person, in a way that leads participants to implement what you teach. You’ll be able to strategically deploy lecture and experiential learning techniques, and your facilitation is engaging and drives learning for everyone in the room.
  • Having a deep knowledge of equitable management and work practices, including the ways in which power dynamics impact non-manager staff. You’ll be able to apply your knowledge to solve participants’ thorniest work or project management challenges, often untangling the problem quickly and offering kind, helpful, and specific advice on-the-spot in front of a room full of people. 
  • Building trust and credibility with both leaders and the most junior staff in nonprofit, social justice, and educational equity organizations. You demonstrate a deep belief in the need to invest in junior staff and help staff across an organization work better, together, and are able to affirm staff’s skills and stories. 
  • Creating the conditions for learning in a training that support vulnerability, risk-taking, mistakes, accountability, and fun! 
  • Spotting equity and inclusion implications of situations, with an intersectional lens on identity and power (including your own), and addressing situations where common practice might be leading to oppression. 
  • Desiring, receiving, and implementing feedback on your own work, and are sharing feedback effectively with others. 

What Else You Should Know

The position can be based anywhere in the U.S. and could involve travel once TMC transitions back to holding in-person trainings. While we don’t currently know when we’ll resume in-person trainings, nor do we know what percentage of our work will remain virtual once we do, we assume that there will be some travel in this role. Travel could occur less than once a month, or up to 2-5 nights on the road per month, depending on the mix of in-person and online work.

Adjunct trainers are paid a daily rate range between $1550 - $2350 per day, depending on the type of training.
