The Management Center (TMC) is seeking a Director of Data to join our Data Team. We are looking for candidates who are meticulous about details while remembering the people and impact behind the numbers, who are excited to support the progressive and educational equity movements, and who thrive on solving problems and making systems more efficient.

Who We Are

Our mission is to help leaders working for social change build and run more equitable, sustainable, and results-driven organizations. Founded in 2006, we’re now a 50+ person, $13 million, remote organization. We've helped shape the practices of hundreds of influential organizations and thousands of individual managers and staff, with a particular focus on social justice and educational equity organizations. Our clients work on critical issues, like advocating for educational equity; promoting immigration reform; fighting for racial, economic, and gender justice; and protecting voting rights. We aim to help them make their organizations as effective as possible by providing coaching, training, and resources for the broader field. Effective management is one crucial way to help build the strong, well-resourced organizations, leaders, and movements we need.

What You’ll Do

Managed by our Partner, Data, Charlie Riebelint, The Director of Data will be the CEO and primary administrator of an efficient and usable Salesforce database and will ensure our Salesforce data is clean, accurate, and timely. The Data Team is responsible for TMC’s programmatic data ecosystem, including Salesforce administration as well as Salesforce connections to other systems

The role will likely evolve over time, but at a minimum, you will:

1. Own Salesforce administration -- approximately 45% of your time

  • Perform regular data management tasks to improve data quality, implementing rules and automation as needed
  • Complete Salesforce configuration changes, including (but not limited to): flow, assignment rules, approval processes, fields, dynamic layouts, applications, and custom settings
  • Respond on a timely basis to user requests and bug reports
  • Own communication of platform changes to end users and other stakeholders
  • Conduct regular training with different user groups and new users
  • Create reports and dashboards
  • Own user and license management, including new user setup, user deactivation, roles, profiles, permissions, groups, and sharing rules
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for our Salesforce database
  • Provide proactive system maintenance including security reviews, monitoring and maintenance of data health dashboards, and identifying unused or underutilized Salesforce features

2. Project Management -- approximately 45% of your time

  • Act as the point person for several teams to identify and gather system requirements, and translate those requirements into scalable solutions with a focus on exceptional user experience
  • Actively engage multiple stakeholders when making changes to interconnected parts of our systems
  • With assistance of Partner, Data, prioritize incoming user requests & follow up with users on the status of those requests
  • Own projects through their full lifecycle and use FAIR process to include stakeholders from design stage through implementation
  • Help teams manage the change that comes with streamlining systems

3. Data Analysis -- approximately 10% of your time

  • Help users make meaning of their data to answer key organizational questions
  • Build Salesforce or spreadsheet reports with an eye for user-friendliness, reusability, and checks for data accuracy

If you’d been in this role in the past year, for example, you would have

  • Designed and implemented a registration form for our in-house trainings, so our intake team doesn’t need to manually upload records
  • Configured Salesforce to capture data about leads and organizations to match a newly redesigned intake prioritization process
  • Built a more streamlined data entry process for our Progressive Sector Partnerships team
  • Reviewed our existing page layouts with an eye for usability and removed old and confusingly named fields

Who You Are

To be successful in this role, you will be someone who will positively contribute to how we think about our culture: excellence with heart. More specifically, you will be most of the following:

  • Experienced Salesforce Administrator. Your expertise does not come from a certain number of years in the field or type of degree, it comes from the experience of configuring and maintaining a Salesforce database used by multiple teams. You know a data system is made up of tech and people and you’ve managed both to ensure the data in your systems  is clean, accurate, and timely. You believe in making data work more transparent, and you update projects and tickets in a shared system. You know user adoption and usability are keys to a successful and healthy database. You consider the implications of technical changes and follow “can we?” with “should we?”
  • Effective project manager. You believe that effective project management is equitable, sustainable, and results-driven. You manage effectively upwards, sideways, diagonally and you are able to gain followership of staff across all levels of the organization. You’ve experienced first hand the joys and challenges of being the point person for several teams to identify, gather, and create solutions for system requirements. You bring a passion for making things work well and an ability to handle a large volume of high-stakes work with multiple deadlines, keeping the big picture in mind while managing the details. You are able to strategically prioritize the most important and impactful projects while keeping the others moving or explicitly placing them on the backburner. You hold a high bar for the accuracy and timeliness of your work, including follow-up and follow-through. You exhibit these qualities without succumbing to perfectionism or false urgency, and you don’t expect that of your colleagues, either! 
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills. You are an active listener who exhibits empathy and good judgment. You can distill what you’ve heard, and clearly communicate the next steps to address the challenges expressed (be that an immediate band-aid, a long-term fix, or an empathetic, "not right now and here's why"). You are able to quickly build a connection with colleagues across the organization. You are known for being able to understand and translate data jargon into language the rest of us can easily follow. 
  • Skilled, practical, and collaborative problem solver. You partner with other stakeholders to anticipate challenges, troubleshoot problems, and decipher unexpected results and can devise creative, pragmatic solutions to help us move forward by identifying and resolving underlying issues. You can weigh multiple, sometimes competing factors; the impact of various decisions; who may be helped or harmed as a result of those decisions; and identify practical options. You enjoy spotting and investigating unexpected results, and you come up with sustainable, long-term solutions. You recognize when different circumstances require different actions. With the support of the Partner, Data, you are able to make decisions that may be unpopular in the short term in order to get better overall outcomes.
  • Demonstrated track record of advancing racial and gender equity. You understand the impact of systemic and implicit biases and inequities related to race, gender, and other identities that can play out in workplaces as well as in data systems; you are able to surface this in ways that allow others to hear what is being said without compromising the integrity/clarity of the message. You center equity, justice, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of the work. You proactively spot issues of equity and inclusion in the work and can bring practical solutions by drawing on personal experience combating white supremacy, racism, and other interconnecting systems of oppression. You can name and grapple with how your own identities play out in the work. You create inclusive cultures where all members thrive and develop equitable and just processes and policies.

The position can be based anywhere in the U.S. and is full-time. This position might involve travel 1-2 times a year for retreats.

The salary range for this role is between $77,266 - $108,360, with exact salary depending on experience. We aim to offer competitive salaries and benefits and are committed to equity, trust, and transparency in compensation. Basing compensation on someone’s willingness and ability to negotiate or on their prior salary leads to wide inequities and bias in how people are paid, particularly for groups experiencing historical oppression. Therefore, we do not ask for prior pay history from our candidates and our offer-making process is negotiation-free for salaries and benefits. We offer our best possible salary based on relevant experience and extent to which candidates demonstrate the competencies for the role during the entire hiring process. TMC also uses our annual performance evaluation process at the end of each year to determine raises and promotions.
